I have started a fundraiser to help protect Sweden’s large predators.

Sweden’s large predators are currently strictly protected under the EU Habitats Directive, and their populations are classified as ranging from highly threatened to vulnerable. Despite this, licensed hunting is still carried out to keep population numbers down. This has contributed, among other things, to high levels of inbreeding in the Swedish wolf population, which in the long term threatens the species’ survival in Sweden.

Our predators play an important role in ecosystems, and many other species depend on their presence. If predators disappear, it will have serious consequences for biodiversity.

The donations raised will help the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (Naturskyddsföreningen) work to:

●influence predator policy so that Sweden’s large predators are given the opportunity to reach and maintain viable populations and expand into their natural ranges

●increase public knowledge and understanding of the importance of predators for biodiversity

●increase knowledge about how human use of land and water affects ecosystems and the species that live within them

●ensure that protective hunting of bears, wolverines, lynx and wolves is only permitted in exceptional cases, when all alternative solutions have been tried and have failed

●ensure that assistance from public authorities is fast and reliable. Livestock owners can currently apply for financial support for predator-resistant fencing, but we believe the government must allocate more funding so that everyone who applies can receive support. We also believe compensation should be available for the additional costs involved in maintaining these fences.
